Empowering Black Communities for Cancer Wellness on National Cancer Wellness Awareness Day

National Cancer Wellness Awareness Day is a reminder of the urgent need to address cancer disparities in Black communities. By raising awareness, fostering collaboration, and advocating for equitable healthcare policies, we can empower Black communities to achieve better cancer outcomes and holistic wellness. Dr. Nazik Hammad, a member of the Black Physicians of Ontario (BPAO) and a Professor in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, emphasizes the urgency of addressing these disparities.

Black Canadians are disproportionately affected by various cancers, including breast, colorectal, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. According to Dr. Hammad, not only is the burden of these cancers higher among Black populations, but the outcomes are often worse. Patients frequently experience more severe symptoms, higher rates of complications, and lower survival rates compared to other groups. These disparities are a call to action for increased awareness and intervention.

Dr. Hammad emphasizes that anti-Black racism is a root cause of multiple intersecting inequalities, including poverty, poor housing, and limited employment opportunities. These factors significantly contribute to Black people’s poor access to quality cancer care and holistic services that enhance well-being. Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort to dismantle systemic barriers and promote equity in healthcare.

To make a meaningful impact, collaboration among various stakeholders is necessary. Dr. Hammad calls for a united front involving Black communities, civil organizations, patient advocates, Black media outlets, and health professionals. “Black people, their civil organizations, patient advocates, Black media outlets, and health professionals should work together to share resources and improve health literacy about shared decision-making regarding treatment and cancer care in general and the role of the individual patient and family in symptom management and wellness,” she advises. Such collaborative efforts can significantly enhance health literacy and empower patients and their families in managing cancer and its associated challenges.

Improving cancer care for Black Canadians also requires robust data collection and research. “I think it is important to advocate for better data collection and research on Black people’s experience with cancer in order to inform policies that will improve access to high quality and respectful care for Black people and ensure their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being throughout their cancer journeys,” Dr. Hammad emphasizes. Comprehensive data will help inform policies and interventions tailored to the unique needs of Black cancer patients.

To create effective policies and improve access to high-quality, respectful care, it is vital to advocate for better data collection and research on Black people’s experiences with cancer. Dr. Hammad stresses the importance of informed policies that ensure the physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of Black cancer patients throughout their journey. Comprehensive data and research will provide the necessary insights to address disparities and improve cancer care outcomes. As Dr. Hammad highlights, it is a collective responsibility to ensure that Black cancer patients receive the care and support they need to thrive.
