The Dr. Miriam Rossi Award of Excellence

 Purpose

The Dr. Miriam Rossi Award of Excellence aims to recognize an individual who has made significant contributions towards improving the health and well being of the Black community in Ontario. The award is named after Dr. Miriam Rossi who was a pediatrician, professor of pediatrics, and former Associate Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine.  As a committed advocate for increased diversity in medicine, Dr. Rossi was a co-founder of the Summer Mentorship Program at the University of Toronto and the Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario.  She was a mentor for many minority students and a vocal and tireless champion for increasing health equity.  Dr. Rossi, passed away in July 2018, having inspired a generation of physicians who are determined to carry on her legacy of quality, inclusiveness, and social justice.

Award

The award recipient will receive an engraved plaque and be recognized at the Annual General Meeting of the Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario.

Eligibility

Persons eligible for nomination would include, but are not limited to, health care professionals, educators, and community leaders.

Selection Criteria

Nominees will be selected based on their track record of achievement in at least one of the following categories:

  • Excellence or innovation in health equity and/or provision of culturally appropriate care to Ontarians
  • Advocacy to improve social determinants of health
  • Initiatives to increase representation of Black physicians in Canada

Particular consideration will be given to candidates whose work focuses on health conditions, or social issues that disproportionately affect the Black community.

Nomination Process

The nominator can be any active member of the Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario.  The nomination package must include the following:

  • Completed nomination form
  • Letter of nomination from the primary nominator, outlining the reasons for nomination with explicit reference to the award criteria
  • Up to two additional letters of support will be allowed.
  • Current curriculum vitae of the nominee

Selection Process

Review and selection will be undertaken by a subcommittee of the Board of the Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario.

Deadline for submission
