This workshop was held on June 18, 2019, and the result of a special meeting, the Deans’ Breakfast, that took place the morning of the BPAO CME event. In February 2019, the Deans and/or their representatives from all the medical schools across Ontario met with the BPAO to discuss the structural barriers that Black medical trainees face in the academic training and healthcare environments, and to explore promising practices like diversity and equity-focused mentorship programs. All representatives agreed that this was an issue requiring follow up so on June 18, 2019, with the support of U of T’s Post-Graduate Medical Education Office and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the BPAO was able to host a follow up meeting/workshop on equity-focused mentorship for Black and other under-represented medical trainees.

 

Attendees were faculty and/or staff who hold the diversity portfolio in the faculties of medicine (MD and/or PGME levels) in Ontario.

 

Objectives:

  1. Explore opportunities to create diversity mentorship programs for medical trainees (medical students/residents) across Ontario
  2. Review data about the challenges that medical students from under-represented groups experience in the first months of medical school  (housing, financial, cultural, etc.)
  3. Describe the work BPAO is doing to support Black medical trainees

 

Representatives from Queens, U of T, University of Ottawa and McMaster attended in person and/or remotely. The event was a success and BPAO intends to continue to work with these leaders to ensure there is equitable support and mentorship for Black medical trainees across Ontario.
