On June 8 the BPAO hosted two events – one for Black medical trainees across the province to learn about financial and emotional wellbeing, part of the SMART series for Black medical trainees, sponsored by MDFM, followed by a phenomenal afternoon, when we all gathered to celebrate newly accepted Black medical students in Ontario– the Class of 2023 – at the 2nd ANNUAL BPAO SPRING SOCIAL!

SMART seminar, The Tips for Building Personal and Financial Wellness, was part of BPAO’s pilot program SMART (Success through Mentorship, Achievement, Research and Teaching). The theme for the day was based on the requests of Ontario’s Black medical trainees. They wanted to learn more about financial management as well as wellness, particularly with regards to managing micro-aggressions and institutionalized racism.

On June 8th, BPAO medical students and residents from across the province attended in person and remotely. The morning session focused on tips and tricks to stay healthy and wealthy (or at least minimize debt!). Financial planning and literacy sessions were provided by MDFM, including a review of their Onboarding platform, and Dr. Onye Nnorom gave a wellness talk, Tips for Staying Well & Overcoming in a Racialized World.

Then in after lunch, everyone headed over to the BPAO Spring Social to welcome the incoming Black medical students – class of 2023, organized by Dr. Renee Beach.

Special thanks to our sponsor, MDFM.
